Driving a van for the first time can feel intimidating, but it’s easier than it looks — a van handles much like a large car. With a little preparation and a few good habits, you’ll be comfortable behind the wheel in no time. Here’s what first-time van drivers need to know.
Start by adjusting your seat and mirrors and locating the controls. Take a slow walk-around to sense the van’s size, then ease out gently. A few minutes getting familiar makes everything that follows easier.
A van is longer and taller than a car. Take turns a bit wider, watch your height in garages and drive-throughs, and give yourself extra space when merging or changing lanes.
With a group aboard, the van is heavier and needs more room to stop. Leave a generous following distance, brake early and gently, and make smooth, deliberate steering inputs.
Take your time parking. Use the backup camera and parking sensors, back in slowly, and don’t be afraid to pull forward and try again. Wide, pull-through spots are your friend.
On the highway, maintain a steady speed and stay aware of crosswinds (our Sprinters’ Crosswind Assist helps). In rain or snow, slow down and increase your following distance even more.
Confidence comes with a few miles. Share the wheel on long trips — up to three additional drivers are free — take breaks, and you’ll quickly feel at home driving a van.
