How to Choose in 4 Steps

  1. Count everyone, drivers included. Up to 7 fits the minivan, up to 10 the Road Cruiser, up to 12 a 12-passenger van and up to 15 a 15-passenger van.
  2. Count the suitcases. If everyone brings a large suitcase, choose a Sprinter, with about 4 ft of space behind the last row. The Ford Transit 15 has no space behind the last row.
  3. Think about the drive. For long road trips, reclining seats make a real difference: Grand Recliner (45°), Golden Chariot (65°) or Road Cruiser (80°).
  4. Check where you will park. Sprinters are about 10.5 ft tall. If you need a parking garage, pick the Ford Transit Low Roof (about 7.2 ft).

Height check: Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are about 10.5 ft tall, and the Ford Transit medium/high roof is also too tall for most parking garages and drive-throughs. The Ford Transit Low Roof is about 7.2 ft tall.

Comfort and Extras

Reclining seats

Only on five vans: the Road Cruiser 10 (80°), Golden Chariot 12 and 15 (65°) and Grand Recliner 12 and 15 (45°). The regular Sprinter and Ford Transit seats do not recline.

Entertainment

Every Sprinter has a TV and Xbox. Apple CarPlay is on the Sprinters and the minivan. The Ford Transits have no TV.

Easiest to park

The minivan and the Ford Transit Low Roof (about 7.2 ft tall) are the easiest to park in the city.

The same on every van: self-drive on a regular driver's license (no CDL), 250 free miles per day then $0.35 per extra mile, three drivers included, and terminal delivery at O'Hare and Midway for customers flying in or out.

Van Size: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special license to drive a 15-passenger van?

No. A regular valid driver's license is enough for every van we rent, including the 15-passenger vans. Drivers must be 25 or older (21 or older with a CDL, a business rental or approval).

What is the cheapest way to move 15 people?

The Ford Transit 15-passenger, starting at $120 a day (low roof). It has no luggage space behind the last row, so it suits groups traveling light.

Which van is best for 12 people with suitcases?

The 15-passenger Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: it seats all 12 with 3 seats to spare and has about 4 ft of luggage space behind the last row. See what van you need for 12 people with luggage.

Will a Sprinter fit in a parking garage?

Usually not. Our Sprinters are about 10.5 ft tall, so avoid parking garages and drive-throughs. The Ford Transit Low Roof (about 7.2 ft) is the easiest van to park in the city.
