A Deep Dive Into Van Rental Age Guidelines In US

Wondering how old you need to be to rent a van in the U.S.? Rental age rules can be confusing, and they’re separate from the license you need to drive. Here’s a clear rundown of how age guidelines generally work — and what to check before you book.

Renting vs. driving

There are two different things at play. To drive a passenger van for personal use, you just need a valid regular driver’s license — no special or commercial license is required, even for a 15-passenger van. To rent one, companies set their own minimum-age policies, which is a separate matter.

Why rental companies set a minimum age

Minimum-age rules exist because insurance and risk are tied to a driver’s experience. Policies vary from company to company, and some add a young-driver surcharge for renters under a certain age.

What to confirm before you book

Ask the rental company three things: their minimum rental age, whether any young-driver fee applies, and how additional drivers are handled. With us, two additional drivers are included free (three drivers in total) — worth knowing when a group wants to share the wheel.
