One of the most common questions we hear is, “Do I need a special license to drive a rental van?” The short answer for personal use is no — and that surprises a lot of people. Here’s exactly what you need to know.

A regular license is enough

For personal use, a valid regular driver’s license is all you need to drive our vans — even a 15-passenger. You do not need a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or any special endorsement to take a group on a trip.

When a CDL would apply

A CDL generally comes into play only for commercial operations above certain size or weight thresholds — think large buses or for-hire transport beyond a standard passenger van. For a family, team, or group traveling together, a regular license covers you.

Add up to three drivers free

Long trips are easier when you can share the driving. Every rental includes two additional drivers free (three drivers in total) — each just needs a valid license — so no one person has to do all the miles.

Drive across the USA and into Canada

Because we’re Illinois-based, you can take our vans anywhere across the country and into Canada on your regular license. Meet the age and driving-record requirements, and you’re ready for the road.

Which van should you pick?

For a comfortable group trip, the 15-passenger Mercedes-Benz Sprinter; for the budget-friendly option, the 15-passenger Ford Transit. See the full fleet.
