Pros and Cons of Renting a Passenger Van for Travel
- Rental Vehicles
Thinking about a passenger van for your next group trip? Like any choice, it has trade-offs. Here’s an honest look at the pros and cons so you can decide what’s right for your group.
The biggest advantage is capacity — up to 15 people plus luggage in one vehicle, so everyone travels together comfortably instead of splitting into cars.
One van shared across the group is far cheaper per person than separate cars or rideshares — one rental, one fuel bill, divided among everyone.
With your own van, you set the schedule and route, make spontaneous stops, and go at your own pace — no timetables, no waiting on rides.
A van is bigger than a car, so parking and tight city streets take a little more care. The good news: it still drives much like a large car, with a backup camera and sensors to help.
A full-size van uses more fuel than a compact car — but split across a group, and compared to a convoy of cars, it’s still the economical choice. A minivan is the most efficient for smaller groups.
For most groups, the pros win easily — togetherness, value, and freedom. Match the van to your group size and trip, and it’s the best way to travel together, across the USA and into Canada.
